Thereafter she shifted to Delhi and there also she was confused about which career should be pursued. There she took some modeling assignments and acted in several plays. Those days for her were very difficult as she refused to take help from her father and even her relatives had no good relations with her.

Kangana Ranaut's debut movie was the romantic thriller Gangster where she was playing the lead role of Simran, an alcoholic woman. The other star cast includes Shiney Ahuja and Emraan Hashmi. There was a romantic triangle in the story. She was just 17 at the time of doing that movie and she was raw and immature. The movie was a commercial success and for this movie, she even received the Filmfare award for the best female debut. The next movie was Wo Lamhe in the year 2006. The story was based on the relationship of Director Mahesh Bhatt and Parveen Babi. She portrayed the role of Parveen Babi and her performance was greatly appreciated. Even though she received positive reviews for her acting, the movie failed to do well at the box office. Her further movies were Shakalaka Boom Boom, Life in a... Metro, Dhaam Dhoom and Fashion. Among these Fashion was the most remarkable movie in her career and this was a commercial successful movie earning Rs. 600 million worldwide.

From the year 2009 to 2012, her career had fluctuations. Her movie Raaz: The Mystery Continues with Emraan Hashmi and Adhyayan Suman was successful. At this point, it was noted that the actress needed a change in image as the earlier one is becoming a stereotype. Vaada Raha & Telugu film Ek Niranjan did not do well. ‘Once Upon a Time in Mumbai’ proved to be a big blockbuster. Then came ‘Tanu weds Manu’ and it completely gave a hike to her in her acting career. Game, Double Dhamaal, Rascals, and Miley Naa Miley Hum were some released in the year 2011. She was also seen in Krrish 3 and it was the highest engrossing movie of that time. Rajjo, Queen, and Tanu Weds Manu: Returns (2015) came afterward and for Tanu Weds Manu: Returns she was appraised for playing a double role. In Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi she acted the lead role and also co-directed it. Panga in the year 2020 did not do well but her work was appreciated.
