Gorkha Community Objects To Sexist Slur Against Nepali Women
Actress Anushka Sharma has attracted the anger of the Gorkha community of Nepal residing in India for a sexist and casteist slur in Paatal Lok that portrays women of Nepal in a negative way that diminishes their dignity. It is a web series launched on OTT apps and Amazon Prime Video. Gorkha people and the legal community have taken a strong objection to this and they have legal action by sending a notice to the actress on 18 May. Although the web series is gaining popularity among the viewers and it is considered to be successful, yet a casteist slur against Nepali women has landed the producers and the web series in legal trouble.
Viren Sri Gurung is the lawyer who has sent the notice and he is a part of a legal organization that gives free legal assistance to people during these difficult times of lockdown and covid19. Anushka is the producer of the web series so the lawyers have taken action against her for including the derogatory dialogue in the series. A woman police personnel in the series Paatal Lok is seen uttering some insulting words against a Nepali character that lowers the dignity of Nepali women. The word Nepali is used in the dialogue and an unacceptable and insulting word is spoken after that. The Gorkha community has objected to this dialogue very strongly.
The Nepali slur used in Paatal Lok has received a negative response from the Gorkhas. They are demanding that the producers and makers of the web series delete the subtitles. They are also demanding that the producers mute the particular objectionable word and slur from the series. People of the Gorkha community have signed a petition against Paatal Lok and forwarded it to the concerned authority Prakash Javadekar, who holds office in the Government Of India as the Information And Broadcasting Minister.
The lawyers who have taken legal action against Anushka are still waiting to get a reply from her. They say that if the producer doesn’t respond to the notice, they will discuss it with the online streaming platforms that show the web series and also the Amazons streaming platform.
